Lettering for Esquire Russia

This April the Russian edition of the magnifique Esquire magazine commissioned me to make custom letterings based Pontifex, a type-in-progress.

Creating Cyrrilic characters was a fun and and advanture at the same time. Deadline was tight but Esquire liked what they got.

Unfortunatelly, letterings gone unpublished but still - this was a great project.

Rendesvous goes Rama

Studies on letter 'a'

Drawn with calligraphic pen before tracing in Illustrator

Check this up

"This was no accident Watson, Sherlock Holmes said, this was done by design."

Wonderful collection by Henk van het Nederend contains ultra-fine letterings on Flickr, here.

Weekend is here again

As the weekend arrived again I grabbed my pens... usually work are done with a 2-5 mm broad pen.
Using a draft made with calligraphic pen I tried to quickly trace over the letters and form simple words.

The long road...

After playing with 2mm wide calligraphic pen and ink for a while, I quickly sketched these letters in Illustrator with a preset calligraphy brush (30degrees) and then started copy and paste, cut and redraw.

This happened after reading the great essay titled Problems Relating to the Translation of a Drawn Letterform to a Digital Typeface written by Eduardo Berliner - you can download it from here too...

I feel these glyphs have much more power and life than any previous one which was either merely constructed in Illustrator or based on drawings by pen.

Now i keep practicing with calligraphy and look forward even more improved letters - and I hope, a full set of characters .
